We are living in times in which there is a rise in nationalism, increasing concern about border control, increasing discontent with the different governments, a decrease in trust on democracy, and the slow homogenisation of political trends which have placed people in power whose motivations and characteristics are more than slightly concerning. Racism shifts focus, the fear of ‘the other’ increases, and an ever growing paranoia seems to be spreading across the globe.
Sometimes it can feel like we’re seeing reality from far too close, and it all might feel disjointed when we are the ones living it day to day. This is where looking at fiction and analysing different media forms can help us make sense of reality. And this is how Star Wars comes into the mix, as it is a prime example of how we can use fiction to draw parallels on reality, which isn’t only clearer at times, but also easy on the stomach….
